Come join us for this inaugural event
where this year we focus on short films by Haitian filmmakers. More
than just a screening, you will experience the Haitian culture with
Music, Food and a special appearance by world reknowned dancer Elizabeth
Chin and Troupe Ayizan. Following the screening will be a Q & A
with the filmmakers.
This year our film selection includes:
Mandingo In a Box directed
by Daheli Hall; Comedy - Mandingo In a Box is an unorthodox look
at romance and the black woman’s quest for the ever-ellusive black
man. A black male lover doll seems like the perfect solution. In love,
one must look outside the box.
Bohio directed by Jean Willy Gerdes;
Documentary - “Bohio, The Descent of the Lwa”, is a short
documentary giving us just a glimpse of how Haitian Vodou, derived from
ancient African Vodou, has inspired the Haitian artist Hersza Barjon.
She has produced a collection of paintings based on the description
of the Haitian pantheon given by “Deita”, in her book: “La Legende
des Loa Vodou Haitiens”.
Breeze directed by Barbara Sanon;
Drama - The essence of a dream is explored as young Rosie steps out
of her Brooklyn brownstone and enters a fantasy space of women. Rosie’s
escape reveals a moment of contact between girlhood and beyond.
Courage des Femme
(Women’s courage) directed
by Arnold Antonin; Documentary - Two
women live breaking stones like the former prisoners of Haiti. <
Bringing Up BayBay produced by
Florence Regina; Comedy - Does Pam Wilcox know how she'll transcend
her low-grade, low-rent cable show to ascend to the ranks of "Entertainment
Reporter Extraordinaire?" The short film "Bringing Up BayBay"
brings you backstage, up close and too damned personal, in some of the
funniest moments you'll ever recognize as true.
Delivering Louverture directed
by Michelson Civil; Drama - A mother sacrifices everything to
get her son out of Haiti and into the United States.
The Violence
directed by Michele Stevenson; Documentary -
Rarely are Haitian women heard describing the outrage and impact of
domestic violence on their lives and the lives of their children.
The thought-provoking and absorbing 10 minute trailer follows three
survivors of domestic violence. Presenting the rarely heard voice
of Haitian battered women, this important film begins to offer valuable
insight into the contradictions and complexities of domestic violence
in the Haitian immigrant communities of New York City.
Solus
produced by Benjamin Louis; Drama – A young Haitian woman tries to
over come the painful memories of her past.
Brooklyn Racine produced by Magali
Damas; Documentary – “Brooklyn Racine” explores what happens when
young immigrants take voudou-based walking music from the hills of Haiti
and reinvent it on the streets of New York. Through this vibrant and
explosive music the documentary reveals a rarely-seen portrait of music
and cultural activism in the Haitian-American experience.
